The traditional heart of the Hickory Flat community is the Hickory Flat
'triangle' bordered by Highway 140, Hickory Road and East Cherokee Drive. Until
the late 1990s this area included a gas station, restaurant, veterinarian,
library and little else. This area now supports well over 50 businesses
including two shopping centers anchored by a Kroger and a Publix.
Immediately bordering the 'triangle' are Hickory Flat Elementary, Dean Rusk
Middle and Sequoyah High, with Mountain Road Elementary serving the southern
portion of the Hickory Flat community and feeding into the middle and high
schools.
The growth in population necessitated splitting these districts, so Avery
Elementary, Creekland Middle and Creekview High serve the northeastern portion
of Hickory Flat and are also listed here.
